Data & Methodology
Data Sources
Trade quantities and values are parsed directly from FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization)
raw datasets.
Specifically, we aggregate Item 656 (Green Bean Exports) and Item 657 (Roasted/Processed Coffee Exports).
Transformation Index (TI)
The Transformation Index determines a country's status as a raw producer vs. a processing hub. It is
calculated by mathematically summing all raw coffee imports and subtracting raw coffee exports. A high net
positive TI indicates a Processing Hub, while a negative TI designates a primary Producer.
Sankey Flow Definitions
Producers β Processors: Raw green bean exports. Processors β Consumers: Roasted/processed coffee exports, plus a mass-balance
retained flow representing raw coffee imported but not re-exported (domestic consumption). Note: A country is categorized as a Processor visually in the Sankey chart if β₯30% of its total coffee
exports are roasted.
Global Weighted Prices & 3D Math
The timeline's Global weighted average price (USD/tonne) divides total worldwide trade value
by total worldwide volume for that specific year. The map's 3D extrusion (depth) is scaled by each country's
Transformation Index, normalized against the global maximum TI, so processing hubs rise taller than raw
producers. Mesh colors run through a power-curve interpolation applied to the same Transformation Index to
increase visual contrast.
